Vales Gaming Download Security and Image Display Help

Displaying Images and Downloading Files on vales.com is limited by game site, your membership their, and the official Download Pop-Up that actually serves you the file.

Directly displaying images elsewhere, direct url downloading or image display, or bypassing the official Download Pop-Up to get files hosted here has been blocked at the server.

This "server block" security uses a simple, common and harmless tag all browsers always sent when you clicked a link on a web site called the REFERRER tag, until recently that is...

Heightened Internet Security in operating systems, download managers, service patches, and third party programs like Norton Security take over your internet connection, and many include blocking the sending of the REFERRER tag.

Referrer Tag- All the REFERRER tag does is pass along the web address of the page you clicked a link from.
In the case of vales.com security, all requests to the server to display a picture or send an add-on file looks to see if the request was referred or requested from a vales.com web page.
e.g. Displaying a sig image or picture in a Forum, or DLing a Truck or Track add-on.

If you have a download or picture display problem, chances are the Referrer tag is the problem.
The test for that is below.

Your current Referrer tag says:  The REFERRER tag was blank.
This is normal if you clicked a link from an e-mail or copy/pasted the URL to this help page into your browser.
Click the test link below to test.

CLICK to TEST YOUR REFERRER TAG

If you have already clicked the Test Link above and still get this display, then your Browser or Security software is not only blocking your Referrer tag, but also blocking your computer from sending Internet Forms.

Test File Downloading Here- Save your daily downloads by testing your download ability here.

If your referrer tag is working and you still can't download, here are some other possible causes:

Browser Security - There are multiple browsers out there like Internet Explorer,  Firefox and Safari. They all have "levels" of security you can choose as well as set a custom security setting.
If your security is set too high it will disable file downloading.
You can either lower overall security to accept file downloads, or leave security the same and just turn on file downloading manually.

In IE click TOOLS/INTERNET OPTIONS/SECURITY and then the CUSTOM LEVEL button near the bottom and you get the manual Security Settings page.
Be sure to ENABLE both File Downloading abilities.

Add vales.com to Trusted Sites -on Internet Explorer 6.0
Click the Tools function from IE (between Favorites and Help), and at the bottom of dropdown menu, left click Internet Options.

You get following box:

Click the Security Tab, then the Trusted Sites Icon, and then Add vales.com to the Trusted Sites list.
Make sure you Uncheck the "Require server verification..." check box.

That should fix you up, if not then check these:

Cookies and the sites URL address line:
All of the sites on vales.com use a little cookie to keep you logged in as you go from page to page, let you enable auto-login, and hold the date of your last visit for the "New Topics since Last Visit" function.

Cookies are strange in they save the URL path to site they are for in a case sensitive manner.
For example, http://vales.com/evo2 and http://vales.com/Evo2 would have different cookies.
For best results always use lower case for url's at vales.com

Download Managers- What a download manager does when you try to download a file is get the direct URL to the file, and then send the url directly so it can resume a failed download.
My server sees this as just someone trying trying to directly download because download managers can't give a referrer url because they in essence act just like you trying to directly DL from your browser address bar, so just disable your download manager here.

Norton Internet Security- This is not about about Norton Anti-virus or any other anti-virus program.
No anti-virus programs will cause a problem.
Norton Internet Security on the other hand blocks your PC from sending the referrer tag.
This is suppose to somehow keep you safer because the computer you went to from clicking a link won't know where you came from.
To me that's lame and protects nothing, but regardless, disable NIS or tell it to OK http://vales.com

Pop-Up Blockers- As a general rule they do not interfere, but if you do not get the download pop-up when you click a files name from the download page your blocker could be the reason.
Adding http://vales.com to the Trusted Sites in your browsers Security Settings should fix that, if not, disable the blocker.
NOTE: No vales.com site ever uses advertising pop-ups or any other form hostile advertising.

Forum Picture Display/Download Problems- Pictures files uploaded to a forum topic have their file name appended with your member ID in the front and the file extension of .FP (for Forum Picture) to the end.
Example of KCtest.gif uploaded to forum as: 2_KCtest.gif.FP

Clicking this 2_KCtest.gif.FP link using IE should open the picture below in a new browser window, to save the image Right Click it, then select Save Link As, click the filename so you can edit it and remove the memberID and .FP from the file name and Save.

For FireFox users, Right Click the file link and select the Open Link in New Window option. A new browsers window will open and you will get a Save File box, simply remove the leading member ID and trailing .FP to save it, as of yet there is no solution for simply displaying the picture.

If you do not see an image above then either your Referrer tag is still being blocked or your non IE browser is not displaying HTML <img> tag images with a .FP extension. Consult your browsers web site help page for help.
