I am currently working on a problem where an XP Pro SP3 system starts up in any mode including safe mode, starts the "Loading Personal Settings" phase, and then immediately goes to "Logging Off" mode.

The machine was running along as usual and Norton Anti-Virus popped up a warning of a threat. The customer clicked the "Remove Threat" option, it completed, said it was removed, and said he should Restart so he did.

I'll post the fix when I find it, but if someone knows it now that would be a help ;-}

sounds to me like it was not Norton asking to fix a file. probably one of those false anti virus programs. :/
it sounds to me like the boot files have been altered tho. but im sure you figured that also.

after all why_not :P

This is a pretty savvy customer so I'm sure it was Norton.
I hooked up the drive to my machine and scanned it with AVG and it found these:

"F:\Program Files\Ares\Ares.exe";"Trojan horse SHeur.BUVB"
"F:\WINDOWS\system32\svchostw.exe";"Trojan horse Generic13.AAU"

Still no go.
I did an XP re-install/repair and still no go.
It's a pouched user file but I can't figure out what to edit in it.

Well, after about 32 hours of real work I've given up.
I'll post the links and files for some things that may work for you.
As of now I have to do a complete new install and update for him so he has it tomorrow morning.

When I first saw this topic I did a quick google search and came up with something like 80,000 hits on xp restart loop.

Much to many to narrow it down to even a few things to try.

Reality is for those that cant handle video games.

Well, this looked promising...
http://thinkinginpixels.com/quick-fixes/fix-windows-xp-log-onlog-off-loop/

I made all the discs and followed all the steps and it didn't work.
Cool bootable reg editor though, I'll use that in the future.

I actually got this machine last Thursday night and had until this morning when the customer got back to fix it.

As mentioned in my post above I waited until noon yesterday to commit to a new install and loaded software all night and got back on it at 4am today.

Things were going along good, I had the OS in and loaded the Motherboard and sound drivers (PCI sound card), and when I plugged my bench speakers in it shut off and wouldn't turn back on.

I pulled the sound card, still no go.
I tried a small PS on it but I don't think it's big enough (it kinda starts and shuts off). I'm going to put my big Antec in it as soon as I finish my quick check of the web sites.

I sure hope it's not the motherboard, this is one of those micro ATX boards in a tiny case.
I put it's MY PC listing up here when I built it in late 2006.

Thankfully my customer was understanding this morning and appreciated the effort to save all his programs. This last minute hardware failure however is a big disappointment to both of us.
