I'm trying to find a good price for ram for my M/B ( an ECS 945GZT-M V1)

This board has slots for two 240-pin DDR2 SDRAMS - 400mhz PC2-3200 or 533mhz PC2-4300 modules. The latter I find extremely rare in local stores.

Right now, I only have 500-megs, but hope to bump it up to 1 or 2 gigs (the max allowed) for as cheap as I can.

Currently, I only see 1-gig 400mhz modules at frys for the $35-$40 range. Not happy about that, since I also see newer 2-gig modules of much faster speeds going for as low as $15 each. $80 for 2 gigs? You'd think the older, slower stuff would cost less by now.

If you see anything like what I seek, please let me know. Thank-yew kindly.

Ah. Close. I guess I should have said that I seek the faster 533mhz PC2-4200/PC2-4300 modules, a single 533mhz module being what I have right now. Newegg only has the slower 400mhz units.

Thank you anyway, bro. That was a quick reply.

You can use faster memory.
It won't be faster, just cheaper.

Are you sure? I ask because I read just the opposite yesterday.

Posted question at http://www.fixya.com/:

"I am planning to set 1 GB DDR2 667MHz ram on this board because I canít find 533MHz in the place where I live. Does any one have try to set a faster ram than specification by manufactured and how the motherboard behaves? Does it going to break it or it will lower the speed of the ram to her optimum working level? "

The reply:

"Sometimes motherboards have the option through BIOS to change bus speeds, but not the memory chips. Usually, the wrong speed will just not work. It won't fry anything, it will just give you long beeps and won't boot up. I've not put any onto a board like yours, but I did try 667MHz chips with one I had with the same memory specs (400/533MHz) as yours and they did not work. You might consider mail order. Newegg.com has pretty good prices. They are very reputable and have very good customer service.
"

I'd hate to spend scarce money on it and find out it's useless. I hate returning stuff to Frys, something I;ve had to do many times.

Maybe I'll check Weird Stuff Warehouse. They're local, specialize in used and surplus computer hardware, and may have some cheap used 533mhz RAM modules in stock.

Thanks for your help guys.

UPDATE:

I THINK I found what I'm looking for at Frys. I just wonder if I can get the same price in-store. I say this because my previous camera was $20 more in the store versus Frys' website pricing.
