QT Lite 3.0.0
QT Lite is a free download, Windows only.
File: QT_Lite-KC.zip at the end of this post.
Source: Links can be found via The Lifehacker page.

Windows only: No one likes being bugged by Apple's Software Update Utility in Windows, but many of us deal with it because we need QuickTime to use iTunes or view the occasional video. QT Lite aims to fix that.

If you don't use iTunes (or any other Apple software), you can finally rid yourself of Apple's Software Update bloat by replacing QuickTime with QT Lite. QT Lite installs only what is necessary to play QuickTime files and nothing more. It still has all the same settings and preferences as the normal version of QuickTime, though.

QT Lite is very similar to QuickTime Alternative, which we featured as one of our superior alternatives to crappy Windows software. The only difference is that QuickTime Alternative also installs Windows Media Player Classic, so it should also work as a QuickTime replacement if you want to install iTunes without the QuickTime bloat.
--------------------------------------

If you want to kiss that QT startup file goodbye as much as I did this stripped down version finally does it even after using the QT configuration.
Plus installing the recommended K-lite codec pack found and fixed all of my codec issues and has tools.

The K-Lite installer is very intuitive and choosing the 'full (but without Windows classic player)' gave me every format I can think of.

QT_Lite-KC.zip files = QT_Lite_300.exe and klcodec520f.exe

I don't know what failed on the UL.
As for QT, I just remove it from my windows start-up file.

If I had to guess. My UL window may have just set there till it timed out when the file size was to big and stopped or something like that.

QT Lite is basically just the web browsers plug-in with a control panel and nothing else. So Apple's not on my PC now.

K-Lite is what made everything I've tried so far (.mov, .flv, ...) work in the software I use like media players/encoders/decoders...
Plus it has the only codec tools that find and fix problems I've seen. (reminds me of registry cleaner)
