Hmm gotta remember updating this..
Drive 2 is now a 1TB WD caviar
Drive 3 is now a 2TB WD Caviar network mapped from my pc.
Need a good S-ATA 3 controller card to make it work inside the server I guess.

There aren't any hard disc drives that can actually utilize SATA 3 transfer rates.
Heck, most drive don't even need SATA 2 speed.
Besides, I think we have way more disc space than we will ever need ;-}

Well, the server may end up with a 8800GT if its quiter.
Or we may build a "new" box to get trub some silence, me some web space, KC some performance and everybody some redundancy.

I have a wild imagination Balth, so I thought up a dream server: EVGA x58 Classified Mobo, Intel i7 980X Six-Core CPU oc'ed past 4.0GHz, 12 GBs o DDR3 @ 2400MHz, 3 GTX295s in SLI, Corsair 1000w PSU. I have the wildest imagination :D.
Question, how much importance does a video card contribute to a server?

If it's broke FIX it. If it's not broke, OVERCLOCK it. If OVERCLOCKING breaks it, get ready to buy a new one

Disply cards used to have only one job: Display Stuff.
This is rapidly changing, as the cards are getting VERY powerful
and programmers finds new ways to harvest the forces within.
Only reason for me to replace the video card in KC's server
is to make it less noisy and / or ease the load on the PSU.
Nobodys going to play games or crunch mumbers on it anyway.

BrainFart: I just remembered...the current mobo was the last one in the AGP age...
And no, it does not have onboard video as it was a high end mobo.
The most powerful AGP card ever eh? Thats why you want it!
Cool if you run a museum :)
Anyway, if it is ever to come out of that box alive its yours.

I updated the listing to show it's an AGP card.

A Diamond 4650512A is AGP.

Time for some thinking!

I'm planning on uprading this box a bit.
It really needs a better motherboard to solve an issue with large HDD's.

This is due to me having a few web sites here, among others I have a site for delivering all the videos, reports, pictures and other files I make for a living at work.
Specially the movies are going to need more and more space.

The planned solution is Gigabyte GA-MA790FXT-UD5P motherboard

It's noisy too.
So I have a Cooler Master Hyper N520 cpu cooler as a tool for keeping whatever's left of Trub's sanity (the server sits in his living room)

Any server loves a bit of memory so I'm gonna give it Corsair Dominator DHX+ DDR3 1600MHz 8GB

To keep up with all of this I'm planning on using a AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition CPU.

As this is a server, it does not require much of a video card.
Trub donated a XFX GF 6600 with 128MB DDR 2 so were gonna go for that.

I had 2 passive cooled XFX GF 8600GT's in my job pc so one of those will be used.

As far as I can see theres one major BUT:
Does the Chiftec 360W PSU have what it takes?

To me, it might do the job but it would be at max or near max load all the time. Doesnn't that 790 chipset mobo have onboard video? That 6600GT wont be doing much but it'll draw some watts. It'll be running all the time, which won't do too good for the PSU... I vote for disabling 2 of the CPU's core inn the BIOS and underclocking it. Doing that, you could lower the CPU use wattage to around 45W while still giving good performance. Just my 2 cents

If it's broke FIX it. If it's not broke, OVERCLOCK it. If OVERCLOCKING breaks it, get ready to buy a new one

There might be onboard video, and if so I'll see if I can disable it.
Onboard video draw significant system resources like system memory, memory bus bandwith blah blah geeky stuff.

Disabling processor cores to save power?
Nope, Never. Read your own Sig Line.

I came up with another solution.

2x Corsair HX 650W PSU's (One for the server and another one for my dad)

It did great in a bunch of tests, heres one from Overclock3D:
http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews/power_supply/corsair_hx650w_650w_atx_psu/1

Heres a Youtube of it:

Another change of plan:
Total Redundancy Wanted!
So I ordered a Midi Tower too.

Balth! I envy you so much right now with all your six cores, Corsair 650w's, and you new HAF 912!!!! And the abundance of DDR3 that you have accquired

The pile of parts up there was enough to build a new server.
Now this is a backup server, and the server change will happen after the new one is fully installed and configured.

R.I.P Old Box....or wait! Hmm...Suggestions as to what we should do with it?
Fill it with cament, get a boat and use it as an anker?
Bring it to the next LAN party and make a new upgraded server?
Most likly. I'll still want a backup-box ya know.
